Mac Fraser is trying to enjoy lunch with a goblin when a businessman at another table starts freaking out. It seems that the poor human can suddenly see monsters. Granted, there are monsters in the restaurant, but regular humans shouldn’t be able to see past their glamours. Fortunately for Mac (and the monsters), the guy was high and will forget what he saw in a few hours. Unfortunately for Mac (and the rest of the world), the guy was high on a new drug called Brimstone. Brimstone allows the taker to see past lies or glamours, which is why the businessman was taking it (guess he didn’t trust his lunch partners). Why is it called Brimstone? Um, because it’s made from Brimstone. Yeah, as in from Hell.
So, Mac and her partner Ian need to find out who is making Brimstone and get it off the streets. Before they can even start their investigation, a drug dealer is murdered. No, not one of the human ones, one of the supernatural ones. He was murdered in an extremely hellish way and whomever murdered him was happy to do it and wants everyone to know it. Is the murder connected to the new drug hitting the streets? Mac is pretty sure that it is and is confident that she’s not going to like the answers.
This is the third book in the SPI (Supernatural Protection and Investigations) series and it just keeps getting better with each book. There’s humor, a bit of romance, some nightmare fuel, drug war, supe war, new abilities, good food, good friends and bad times. Basically, everything I want in an urban fantasy book.
