So Ellepkay continues to just send me Carla Kelly books without asking if I want them or not. Turns out, she continues to be right in that I want them and will happily read them all! This time we have In Love and War a collection of four short stories that take place around-ish the Napoleonic Wars/War of 1812.
These four stories are unlike a lot of romance on the market these days. In the first story the heroine is a Quaker and the hero is a younger brother of a lord. In the second we have a Puritan Boston sea captain and a gentlewoman spinster. The third is a war widow and an artillery man on leave from the wars, and lastly we have a former clerk and soldier from India and a charming hotel guest. All of them are very simple little stories, that quickly get down to the issue of people meeting and finding connections together.
I quite enjoyed all of them. Especially the second one with our charming rogue of a sea captain and spinster gentlewoman. They had quite a soothing, but fun banter to their story. The only one I didn’t wholeheartedly enjoy was the third, because there was a side plot of a young child found during the wars and what to do with her. Our heroine’s awful sister tries to dump her at a workhouse, and it was just highly upsetting all around. Probably due to being still full of new mommy craziness, but whatever. Upsetting.
Anywho if you’re into Carla Kelly and haven’t tried these yet I quite recommend. If you haven’t tried her yet, but are thinking about it, these aren’t a bad place to start with getting to dab a toe into her waters of sweet, kind love stories.

I do not remember stories 1 & 3, but 2 & 4 have both really stuck with me.
