The Couple that Slays Together Stays Together

May 5, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I don’t know how Married with Zombies came to be on my Goodreads recommendation list, perhaps Warm Bodies or even Station Eleven triggered its algorithim. The writing style is very amateurish but the story is cute enough- it’s a silly, mostly enjoyable take on the zombie apocalypse.

But I have to say, the zombie plague saved my marriage. And if you follow the rules, have each other’s backs and stick together… it could save yours, too

Sarah and Dave are trying to save their relationship through marriage counseling, unfortunately on their way to appointment one day a zombie outbreak occurs. The novel is from Sarah’s perspective, and she’s much calmer in a zombie outbreak than I’d be (I have assured my husband I’ll pull the trigger myself after the first news bulletin) Sarah and Dave arrive at their appointment and immediately Jack Bauer the situation, killing their zombie therapist, zombie receptionist and the newly turned couple in the office. They soon discover Seattle is overrun and they, along with a neighbor, begin a journey to safety.

There are a lot of convenient elements to their journey that lend to the overall  sophomoric feel of the novel. Everything is pretty predictable but I don’t think anyone reading a zombie novel is expecting Pulitzer Prize material. I did like that Petersen played with the typical zombie lore and gave her infected a few moments of clarity before they turned, which some used for good and some evil.

Not sure if I’ll seek out the three sequels but it was a harmless enough effort.
