The Seinfeld of Sci-Fi – The Time Travel Book about Nothing

June 1, 2016 by ardaigle 4 Comments

Unknown-2I don’t have a lot of time for a robust review, so I’ll sum up some of my thoughts up, list style.

  • I’m not a regular science fiction reader.  I like action, and character development.  If you like all the parts in “Lord of the Rings” where they are walking and not a lot is happening, this book is for you.
  • I liked a lot of the elements of this book (time travel as commonplace, dual timelines, misdirection and mystery, historical context) but altogether I wouldn’t rate it a success.  A lot of time wasted showing the progression of time, with very little advancement made in story.
  • Where oh where was the elusive Basingame?? Total MacGuffin
  • Why did no one ever tell off the HORRIBLE Gaddson woman?  She was the worst.  And I’m saying that in a book that had the bubonic plague.  She was literally worse than the bubonic plague.  I would rather fade away after being covered in bubos then listen to that woman read the Bible and rant about her son, who was off in closets making out with half the nursing staff.
  • Colin rules
  • Dunworthy rules
  • Gilchrist drools
  • Kivrin is a bamf
  • Roche, also a bamf
  • Agnes et al were fine.
  • Mary and Montoya rule.  Lots of badass ladies in this book.
  • All that waiting, and back and forth, and SUCH little pay-off at the end!!  I wanted more resolution upon return to the present.

I am a born and bred southerner and recent transplant to the Midwest. I read because I want to, because I NEED to, and because I'm possibly ignoring the frigid temperatures. Until spring, and then I may read outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. View ardaigle's reviews»

I feel like Kivrin was only a BAMF in the last part of the book. She kinda pissed me off in parts 1 and 2.

I too wanted more from the end. It just kind of ended. I mean, it was a good ending, but some resolution (an epilogue maybe) would have been nice.
