Mermaids the Eat People & are Kind of Bitchy

Summary: When three beautiful girls come to the small town of Capri, Gemma and her sister are suspicious. The girls are eerily beautiful and are completely pretentious. They don’t speak to anyone, but they want to speak to Gemma. Gemma is a swimmer and she goes out for nightly swims in the bay by her house. One night, the girls entrance her to join them and her life is never the same.

This book had a lot of potential. It wasn’t bad per se, but I think it could have been a lot better. There didn’t seem to be much plot, nothing really happened until like halfway through besides talking and thinking. Her dad forgot her lunch a lot. This book is also strangely narrated. Its main narrators are Gemma and Harper, but we get the thoughts of Alex and a couple others mixed in. It wasn’t badly done, but it was randomly thrown in and mainly confused me.

The romance was boring for me. Alex & Gemma’s relationship had the potential to be one of those cutesy girl/boy next door relationships but it was just awkward. I could tell they liked each other, but I didn’t feel invested in their relationship at all. I was indifferent at best. Now Harper & Daniel’s relationship had some real potential to be steamy and an adrenaline rush of falling head over heels. It was not. Every time they were alone together I was waiting for the sparks to fly off the page and to be consumed by romance and feels. I was thoroughly disappointed. Almost every time Harper makes a wrong move and the moment just failed miserably. It was really frustrating because I thought they had great chemistry.

Another problem was that I really didn’t get attached to the characters. I didn’t really like Harper all that much, she was too controlling, bossy and almost always berating Gemma. She really needed to stop. Gemma was better but when it came to making the decision about her life as a mermaid or human, she was so wish washy! She would pick one option but then rethink the decision and pick the other option and repeat. Ugh please pick one and stick with it. However, I did LOVE Daniel. He’s definitely my favorite character and there’s more to him than was revealed in this book (at least that’s what I think).

I’m probably going to pick up the next book, because I am curious to see what happened. I had my doubts about the book and some were right while others weren’t. Overall, it wasn’t terrible and I did enjoy myself. Plus the cover shines in the sun and it’s so cool!!!!
