I keep trying with comic books and I think I may stop soon. (Although I have another review of one coming right up.) Something about the medium doesn’t work for me. I wanted to try a Daredevil comic because I really enjoyed the Netflix series. After looking into it, the Frank Miller run seemed like a good place to start. The problem with this volume is that it is only a start. Across the issues collected here, the only thing that really happens is the introduction of the main characters. Things that were covered before the main titles of the TV take page after page. Maybe it was a mistake to read this after seeing the TV show.
The exhaustive set-up finally does culminate in a wisp of a story involving the rise of the Kingpin and Matt’s efforts to save a little girl from his clutches. But it’s just not enough to really dig into.
I should (in the case of comic books at least) just stick to TV.
I don’t know what you’ve read, but writing as a former comic book fan who has tried returning to the medium 20 years after abandoning it, you’re probably best sticking to stand alone series’.
I would recommend Bone by Jeff Smith (because I always recommend it, it’s delightful) and Kingdom Come by Alex Ross and (I think) Mark Waid.
