It doesn’t feel like nothing.

August 2, 2016 by emmalita Leave a Comment

last daysWhat would you do if the world were ending? What would you do if you were a 16 year old girl with super powers? At the end of Crushed, Kamala Khan felt like the world was ending because she had been betrayed by her first crush. But now, the world is really ending. What good is it to be a superhero if you can’t keep the world from ending? What do you do when nothing you do will change the outcome?

Ms. Marvel finally gets her team-up with Captain Marvel on the worst day ever. The issues covering the Last Days Arc (there’s also a team up with Spiderman at the end, but it doesn’t feel like it counts) are beautiful and heartfelt. Kamala gets moments with her idol, her family, her friends and her enemies. Kamala has character defining realizations about who she is as Kamala Khan, and what she’s doing as Ms. Marvel.

I was happy to see the return of Adrian Alphona as the artist. I think his Kamala is the most individual and most clearly a Desi girl. I do love the way they continue to portray Kamala in ways that move her around on the spectrum between awkward teen/enthusiastic fan and competent hero.

I really enjoyed the Last Days arc. The unrelated Spider Man team up at the end felt weird and anti-climactic. I wish it had been at the beginning, because it was fun to see Ms. Marvel being a more straight forward hero in a more straight forward good person/bad person situation.

If you aren’t reading Ms. Marvel yet, get on that.
