Double Cannonball!

December 19, 2016 by Caitlin_D 10 Comments

My first double cannonball! It only took three years to work myself up to this goal and I can assure you that has everything to do with CBR and sticking it to cancer!

The Sun is Also a Star was a wonderful book to hit a milestone with. Nicola Yoon is a new (to me at least) voice in YA fiction that has been racking up awards for her charming books.

Natasha is a Jamaican illegal immigrant who is set to be deported after her father got them discovered by law enforcement. While spending her last day in New York City, trying to get a lawyer to help her case, she runs into Daniel. Daniel is the son of Korean immigrants; his parents have a life plan set up for him that includes going to Yale and becoming a doctor, even though he dreams of being a poet.

“I didn’t know you this morning, and now I don’t remember not knowing you.”

The two feel a connection and spend the afternoon getting to know each other and falling in love. It’s a bit schamltzy but the characters recognize they’re falling for each other a bit too quickly. Interspersed throughout Natasha and Daniel’s narrative there are fringe character’s viewpoints that color the rest of the story. Some of these feel a bit unnecessary but others fill in gaps of information that Natasha and Daniel aren’t privy to.

The ending is less predictable than Yoon’s Everything Everything but not as devastating as say, The Fault in our Stars. Either way Yoon is quickly joining the ranks of Rainbow Rowell and John Green in my “can’t miss” YA authors list.

Woo! Happy double Cannonball! It’s extra satisfying when it’s a goal you’ve worked long to achieve. I’ve heard good things about this book. I got Everything, Everything in an e-book sale a while back, but as is often the case, haven’t had time to read it yet. Glad to hear Yoon is a good author. Looking forward to trying her books.

Woohoo!! Happy double cannonball! I remember being shocked last year that I made it that far, and I’m so happy for you that you reached it too. The summary of this book reminds me in a lot of good ways of the movie Amira & Sam which was one of my favorite movies of the past few years that no one has seen.

Congrats! Congrats! I just finished listening to this one in the car last week. I loved it! And you’re right on the ending. Ms. Yoon has definitely cemented herself on my YA authors list.
