I mean, he *says* he’s not

December 1, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This is one of those books with a twist that will make it or break it for you. I personally felt hooked until the twist, and then thought it went pretty much downhill from there. Your mileage may vary, however.

“I’ve been clinically diagnosed with sociopathy,’ I said. ‘Do you know what that means?’
‘It means you’re a freak,’ he said.
‘It means that you’re about as important to me as a cardboard box,’ I said. ‘You’re just a thing – a piece of garbage that no one’s thrown away yet. Is that what you want me to say?’

John Wayne Carver is a sociopath, and he knows it. He funnels his fascination with death and total lack of empathy into his work at his mother’s funeral home, and an obsession with serial killers. His weird tastes and lack of affect makes him a freak at school, and his family life isn’t much better. When a serial killer begins murdering people in his own town, John decides to refocus his efforts.

Like I said, this book has a twist. I knew that going in, based on other reviews, but I was WAY off in what I expected. I didn’t particularly like the twist, but I did like how the author wrapped things up in the end. I also loved the behind the scenes in the funeral parlor thing, but I’m a little weird, too. If you can get on board with the direction that it takes about 100 pages in, then you’d probably like it quite a bit.
