Let the Wookie Win

Mmmm…

At last, the unsung hero of the Star Wars franchise gets his due. Never mind the drama queen Skywalker boys, or that show boating Han Solo, Chewbacca is the “big walking carpet” who gets stuff done. He gets the mission completed without spreading his family drama all over the galaxy.

Gerry Dugan is one of my favorite comic book writers. I love his Deadpool run, and was looking forward to reading his Chewbacca adventures. I put it on my list after reading Halb’s review. I am not disappointed.

The violence promised by Han’s famous advice to R2D2, “Let the Wookie win” never really seems to be seen again in the Star Wars movies. I assume this is because they are told through a human centric lens and the referenced Wookie violence would be too frightening for human viewers. The bad guys in Chewbacca though, seem to have a health respect for Wookie capabilities. 

In this adventure, Chewbacca is on a mission without Han Solo and separate from the Rebellion. He crash lands on an outer rim planet and gets involved with a girl, Zarro, trying to save her father and planet from the clutches of a ruthless criminal. The criminal in question has enslaved people to work in mines and he is trying to do business with the Empire.

Zarro and Chewbacca make a great team. Zarro is brave and smart, and gives Chewbacca free reign to make the plans, mostly. Chewbacca and Zarro are the heroes, even if they never get their own movie.

Phil Noto’s illustrations are spectacular. The artwork moves the story along and allows Chewbacca to communicate with out an interpreter. It’s a fun read and I highly recommend it.
