I enjoyed reading Mrs. Julien’s hilarious Kresley Cole book reviews during previous cannonball reads. I read Shadows Claim last year when it was a Vaginal Fantasy pick, but didn’t really get fully hooked. So when I was in The Ripped Bodice, I decided to tackle one of the first books in the series for my trip to Greece.
A Hunger Like No Other follows Lachlain, a lykae (werewolf) Scottish warrior on a journey of love and revenge. The male kind of his species mate for life when first meeting said woman. However, the actual mating could take years as the encounter is left up to chance. Lots of whoring about until that happens. I decided to not think too hard about this story logic and go with it. Can’t be any worse than several of the werewolf films I’ve seen over the years, right?
Apparently, the bond is so strong he can sense her miles aboveground when his “beloved” walks by. Despite his centuries long chained imprisonment beneath Paris, this crazed werewolf cuts through his own leg to escape and chase down his mate. He is like the most intense stalker ever. His target is Emmaline Troy, a half vampire/half Valkyrie, who is seeking clues about her parents who damned everything for their love and died when she was a baby. Her Valkyrie sisters despise vampires and forbid her from feeding on flesh. They have sheltered her from the world and home schooled her from their NOLA compound. Needless to say, she is terrified out of her wits when she is finally out on her own and hit on by an unhinged Scots who proclaims his forever binding love for her!
In a very misogynist, but not surprising, turn of events he doesn’t care if she loves him or not. His need is too strong. He essentially kidnaps her for a very long road trip back to Scotland to his castle. Did I mention he’s rich and handsome (after that pesky leg heals)? Emma is also very well off as Valkyries have become very good with money over the eons. During the trip, he learns about the centuries he’s missed with the help of Emma and cable tv. Of course, Emma begins to fall for the rogue once he finds his manners. She seems to unable to help herself especially once she accidentally tastes his blood. He allows her to feed on him and unknowingly bonds them futher together as his memories are transferred in the blood. She dreams of his chaotic past not sure if it’s real. Seeing his fierceness in battle, Emma finally begins to embraces her own power.
Of course, once they surrender to their undeniable passion, her Valkyrie sisters show up to “rescue” her – again against Emma’s will. Lachlain is miserable without her and attacks the Valkyrie house to win her back. During all this useless fighting, no one really asks Emma what’s she wants. Bit ridiculous. And then somehow, she is kidnapped a third time but now by vampires. I won’t spoil the end, but Emma finally has to get herself out of her own mess for a change.
My friend traveling with me to Greece was reading a serious fiction drama. She was fascinated by the Kresley Cole cover when I pulled it out of my bag. It was quite fun to keep her up to date with the narrative while drinking our wine from plastic cups. If you’re looking for an extremely silly read with dumb werewolves who think with their nether regions far too much, then this is the book for you.

If I *had to* give props to one it would would Cadeon and Holly’s book Dark Desires After Dusk which is a guilty pleasure of mine. Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night didn’t completely suck.
