A series to skip

January 10, 2017 by SandyLemons 1 Comment

Marked (Servants of Fate Book 1) by [Fine, Sarah]A book with a very interesting plot setup and potential to go in an interesting direction could have been great… However, it quickly devolved into needing a less than stellar romance plot as do most of the worst in this genre.

The premise behind this series is that there are humans which serve to ferry dead souls to the next world. Much like crossing the River Styx, but you know, updated! They have necklaces not boats… In order to feel better about their role in the afterlives of people, the main character is a paramedic. Save souls during the day, ferry others by night. The book started out strong, but then you meet her new partner, which obviously becomes the love interest (even though she shouldn’t = gag me with a spoon). The story falls apart as you are witness to a very precarious love affair with far too much detail to land this in the YA section. I am unsure of who the actual audience of this story should be. I suppose the same as those who loved 50 Shades for the excellent writing…

If you loved Twilight and 50 Shades you will likely love this book. Amazon lists it as a Fantasy/Romance. I sometimes enjoy this genre greatly. Although as I have read so many series, I have found two major things which greatly bother me, both of which are heavily present in this book.

  1. I truly loathe when the main female character falls into love clichés (“I’m too hurt and damaged to move on, but he’s so dreamy!” or “I need him to make me feel whole”).
  2. When there are sex scenes thrown in which are completely irrelevant to the plot and character development.

I hate giving up on a series without seeing it all the way through… but I doubt I will be finishing this one.

    1) Yeah, I’m avoiding this with a ten foot clown pole.
    2) I will someday find a romance that you will love, and then you’ll join us all down the rabbit hole and it will be glorious. Glorious I say!
