Dear Nobody

January 17, 2017 by Ealbrecht 1 Comment

Mary Rose grew up in the 1990s. A time where the book reminds you that you documented your life in a diary instead of on social media. In Dear Nobody, we read from Mary Rose’s diary, in which she titles each entry with “Dear Nobody.” In her diary, we see her struggle with illness, abuse, arrests, addiction to alcohol and drugs, and rape.

Through the diary, we see Mary Rose struggle with relationships. After moving to a new town, she struggles to make new friends. We also see her journey in trying to get the attention of her crush. We see her struggle with addiction, making promises to herself that she ends up breaking.

We also see her struggle with an chronic illness, cystic fibrosis.  This causes her to be hospitalized many times, and causes her to have to take many medications daily.

Although she struggles with illness, abuse, arrests, addiction, and rape there is one thing that she is longing for throughout the book: love. She wants to be loved, by her mother, by a boyfriend, and just to have good friends in general.

This book is Mary Rose’s diary. Her exact words. This can make it hard to read at times, as it is sometimes hard to follow as not all her diary entries could be included in the book. I would also like to warn younger readers as drinking, drugs, and swearing are frequent throughout “Dear Nobody.”
