This one has already been reviewed a couple of times, so really I’m just here to add my voice to the crowd. I love a good young adult. And whoo-ey is this one good. I did the audio version, which I also highly recommend as the three narrators are excellent.
The Sun is Also a Star is told from three points of view: Natasha, Daniel, and the Universe. Natasha is an illegal immigrant from Jamaica about to be deported, Daniel is a Korean American just trying to make it through high school until he can make his escape, and the Universe? Well, it’s there to fill in any little bits of the back story you might need. Through many chance occurrences as a result of the Universe Natasha and Daniel end up meeting. Together they go on a Nick and Norah-like adventure, and wonderful, sad, and funny things happen all along the way.
This one was a total winner. Natasha and Daniel were wonderfully well drawn teenagers. Realistic and believable, unlike so many fictional teens with their adult style of speech and superhuman capabilities. The stakes were high in this one, yet at the same time the drama and angst were at such a reasonable level I never found myself getting frustrated with the “youths” as I do with most young adult books these days. The ending was also pitch perfect. I won’t ruin it, but goodness, Ms. Yoon handled it beautifully.
If you’re looking for a stellar young adult, you don’t have to look further. The audiobook is also totally worth it, and will definitely be a re-listen for me over the years. This is a new favorite. If you like young adult, give this one a go.
I just finished this one, and agree on its awesomeness. I also really enjoyed Everything, Everything, so its clear that Yoon is a writer to watch.
I loved the way the chapters moved from narrator to narrator and included all of the minor characters in Natasha and Daniel’s orbit. Really well done.
Lady, you are out quick this CBR!I’m hoping to get my first review done by tomorrow…
I finished between audio/reading 7 books between 12/24 and 1/1. Pretty much I’m just trying to catch up at the moment. I’ll finish another 2 this weekend too.
This is on my list… but a YA which isn’t post-apocolyptic/dystopian? I don’t know how to handle that…
