Look, of course I am going to talk about Stranger Things

February 18, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I guess will mention that I like Stranger Things just fine. But it has a false veneer to it because there’s so many nods to so many things. That’s fun, but it automatically lacks depth or seriousness (and I will not be arguing that this series lacks thematic depth, but it does have narrative depth), because if you’re winking and nodding too much, you’re not doing a whole lot.

This series is a lot of fun too. The girls are tough, the writing is tight, and the shit is weird.

If you haven’t read Saga, you should. It’s like what if Guardians of the Galaxy were made by a writers who doesn’t owe a fundamental debt to any source material.

This does the same thing with Stranger Things. That said, keep in mind that this is not a version of that show. It’s a concurrent project that parallels similar ideas and concerns.

One thing that always bothers me about 80s nostalgia or just 80s stuff in general is the weird ways in which world-destroying discoveries don’t send everyone into a panic never before seen the likes of. This one at least makes the main characters reckon a little with what is going on.

Anyway, it’s promising first couple of issues. I really like the art so far, and the coloring is really cool. The art direction and all the other work put into this issues feels like such a finalized and professional product worth of the time and consideration of the reader. I am little bummed that this is a cool girl actiony comic made mostly by men though.

Highlight: Having someone call someone a “f$$$$$” and have to deal with social consequences for it. Decentness abides.

I want to read more older things and British things this year, and some that are both. Oh and I’ll probably end up reading a bunch of Italian and French writers this year too. I think. View vel veeter's reviews»
