Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

One thing that I enjoyed about Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was the way the author is constantly talking to you. This made the book enjoyable for me as I felt that I was having a conversation with the narrator. The narrator is  Greg, a high school senior. He has one goal in school, to be part of every group in school yet to be friends with no one; this is something that he is surprisingly able to do. He feels like he is part of every group in school, yet not the center of any group.

Greg does have one friend, Earl, although he attends an alternative school. He’s  been friends with Earl since Kindergarten. Earl can be gross at times but that is part of the relationship that he has with Greg. Greg and Earl like recreating movies that they watch. The movies that recreate aren’t movies that you would typically expect high schoolers to watch. Together they have recreated multiple movies, although they don’t allow anyone else to watch their creations. They see the movies as something that is just for them.

Greg also isn’t interested in a girlfriend. He describes his experiences throughout his school years with girls he has had interest in. Of course, each time he did something wrong. One of the girls that he dates briefly during middle school ends up getting cancer during their senior year. When his mother learns that he’s been diagnosed, she forces Greg to begin spending time with her.
