These are the books I worry about my nephew for

February 11, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Ugh….why does it have to be Lumberjanes?? Why not Lumberjohns…..wait, Lumberjames?! That’s right! First we ALMOST have a girl for president and then we have to sit here and lose our valuable logging industry to the worldwide GYNOCRACY!

I worry about what my 10 year old nephew will do when he thinks he is picking up a a wholesome boyscout comic book and this is what he reads. Girls not needing boys, girls running around causing trouble, girls having great adventures, but not thinking about makeup and boys. Also, the girls beat up monsters and they are obviously too weak to really be able to do that. So this book where girl campers beat up monsters is so fake!

Also, they know what the Fibonacci Sequence is? Yeah, whatever!

Anyway, I guess if you want your girlfolk to grow up to think for themselves, to feel strong, to think they can do things without the help of men in their lives, well go ahead and put this in their hands!

Did I even mention the smut this book contains?

Ok I can’t keep that up. Seriously this is a really funny series. It’s pure adventure, heavy on the irreverence and medium on the whimsy. It’s more audacious than anything that is critical of men and boys, because it pretty much exists in a world in which they don’t even exist at all. Oh, well, I guess they’re there as monsters that show up to fight. The girls are unruly and untamed. They have lots of skills. And they do this without the kind of annoying trope I find in a lot of texts like this of telling us just how awesome they are as they go.

This is a really good kind of representation because it completely normalizes all the adventure and weird tropes that we often see with mixed gender or boyfocused stuff without even making any kind of nod to anything. The adventures in this book are completely without context and stuff is a little random. It would make for a great cartoon series and I hope they get funded to do that kind of stuff.

I want to read more older things and British things this year, and some that are both. Oh and I’ll probably end up reading a bunch of Italian and French writers this year too. I think. View vel veeter's reviews»
