So Mrs. Julien recommended this one the other week to the romance crowd. As it was free for Kindle it was an easy decision to snatch it up. Come a late night returning from work travel, and this one got picked up until I finished. It was quick and fun. What more could you ask for?
Anne-Marie Smith is new to the neighborhood outside of Houston in 1962. She is shockingly divorced and on her own with her two young kids for the first time. Christopher (Kit) Campbell is one of the Perseid Six, astronaut in training, and one of the most recognizable men in America. There’s a meet cute, some misunderstandings, some cold shoulders that soften, and a cute dog running around. It was all very 1960’s.
And I enjoyed the brief foray into astronaut culture. It was short and sweet which is what I needed for my plane flight, but also decently researched history-wise which helped with the believe-ability. It starts with Sputnik in 1957, and our hero is out Pax River, one of NAVAIR’s main headquarters even through today. Thanks for the decent fact checking authors. Always appreciated.
It was a little short, but as I said that worked well in this situation of me being trapped on a plane, but it did result in a ridiculous timeline. We went from meeting to each character thinking about marriage in a matter of weeks. That felt a little quick, okay a lot quick, especially for such a modern time, but woe is me for trying to fight against a classic romance trope. Also there’s children and a dog plot moppets, but honestly they were better than 90% of plot moppets on the market.
There’s more to this series that I plan to pick up. If they’re as short and lighthearted as this one I should be all set being entertained for the next few days.
I did really like it. I gave it more stars, but that’s because 3 stars is my “this passed the time quite pleasantly” rating and this was better than that.
Timelines are always an issue for me, but I just surrender to it.
Oh, Instalove. It really only belongs in historicals where my brain can suspend its disbelief. I believe I already downloaded this one, so eventually I’ll get to it. :)
Somehow, even with the compressed timesline, they manage to make it not instalove and more like instalust with reluctant growing love.
