The Cuckoo’s Not a Bird in This One

March 16, 2017 by Beth Ellen 7 Comments

So I’ve been trying to set loose reading goals every year for specific genres in order to attempt to widen my reading habits. The first time it was romance, and I was wildly successful in reading tons of new authors. Last year I meant it to be fantasy, but that’s spilling over into this year as well. Oops. But this year is mystery. And I’ve started off with a bang!

The Cuckoo’s Calling is the first in the Cormoran Strike series. Cormoran Strike is a slightly down on his luck ex-army PI who ends up taking the case to reinvestigate the suicide of Lula Landry, supermodel. Helping Cormoran in his endeavors is his plucky temp Robin. There’s a whole cast of would be murderers to choose from, and I thought it could have been any of them at one point or another.

This one was great! I did the audiobook and the narrator, Robert Glenister, was delightful. He really captured the spirit of the story. I really enjoy a good mystery as long as it’s not gruesome and doesn’t involve children. This one really fit the bill. At one point I guessed correctly who the murderer was, but proceeded to change my mind then another half dozen times at least. That’s how you know it’s a good mystery, it keeps you guessing. The imagery overall was fantastic, the characters were all three dimensional, and I enjoyed every second. I’m already in the middle of the next!

Anywho if you’re looking for a good mystery series I can’t recommend the first of these enough. Fascinating in a Sherlock Holmes way, but Cormoran is no Sherlock. He’s clever, but he puts in a lot of work to solve his cases. I’m really loving the world building of these and can’t wait to see what happens next.

I love these books, especially on audio. Fair warning, the 2nd one has some gruesome bits, but no kids

I just got to the gruesome bits! It’s okay so far though. As long as that’s not the rest of the entire book.

Everyone is talking up the audio on this, I’m definitely doing it that way for my re-read.

Do it! I started reading this one and just couldn’t get into it, but thanks to an audible sale I got the audio. He’s fabulous!

Yay! And WOOHOO for audio. Teh second one is a bit gruesome, and the third has some bad things happen to kids in the past of the story, but its not the main plot or mystery. I’m glad you’re enjoying these.

Thanks for the warning on the third. It should hopefully be okay. Ms. Rowling has really come into her own in her writing, I’m enjoying the hell out of her imagery. Even the gruesome bit right now.
