Sometimes I am incredibly scared about the world. And often when I get scared, I rationalize my own place in it and maybe even the degree of danger the world is in.
Sometimes when I read writers who come at their analysis from a Marxist perspective and this set of actions gets even more pronounced. And often, when that writer is Communist, I am able to at least roll my eyes a little bit and feel a little better.
Angela Davis sort of splits the difference for me. bell hooks is another writers who is able to tell how terrible things are, but not make me feel like dying instead of trying to fix it.
I am not a nihilist at all, nor am I an optimist. Instead, I am always looking for a walkable path. So I will often stay off the internet where everyone tries to make you feel bad for what you do and makes you feel bad for what you don’t do.
Something that this book really allows for to understand why people are fighting, how that fight is an internationalist goal, and what are some rational ways to look at it.
It’s not a book that makes me feel good or bad, but instead seems to be telling the truth.
One truth I feel like this book reminds me of, is that the US Government is a force for violence around the world, no matter who the president is. Angela Davis says at one point, criticism against Barack Obama does not mean we’d be better off with Mitt Romney as president. Instead, this is a false choice I think we revel in a little bit.
Now, we have Donald Trump. I think the inverse could be that Donald Trump being the worst president doesn’t mean there wouldn’t have been issues to criticize the US Government.
I don’t know, man. This kind of life, constantly fighting has to be exhausting.
