Trust Me, It’s Pretty Mediocre

April 17, 2017 by Beth Ellen 2 Comments

Trust Me by Laura Florand is her latest in her Paris Nights series. The first in the series, All for You, was fine, the second, Chase Me, was silly and a heck of a lot of fun. Here she picks up in the almost immediate aftermath of Chase Me.

Lina Farah is one of Paris’ top pastry chefs. “Jake Adams” is a “civilian” aka special ops fighting the war on terror in Paris. They meet due to the climax of the Chase Me, and their love story unfolds in the terrifying aftermath.

And again I have so many causes for concern as I have with so many other romances this year. Is it that I’m reading my romances on a deeper level now, or that I’ve read most of the good ones and this is what I’m stuck with? No clue. But this one did make me pause more than once. Lina has just been through a traumatic event, she has been taken into custody, questioned as a possible colluder to terrorism, and watched her best friend almost die. Jake has more experience with these situations than almost anyone else on the planet. And while he acknowledges briefly that he should not be getting involved with her due to the above, that gets waylaid pretty quickly. I repeatedly told this fictional character, “You know better. Stop that!”. It was very annoying. This all boiled over for me at the end with the obvious marriage proposal (Does it count as spoilers for a romance? Sorry, spoilers.) Our beloved hero proposes after less than two months of knowing each other, through which a terrorist attack occurred. And she says yes! And, yes I know, Ms. Florand loves a ridiculously fast romance that ends in marriage for no reason (looking at you chocolate thief), but she is also the author of Dom and Jaime. What would be so terrible about a woman who is recovering and a man who is still technically deployed about taking a bit and dating? That I do not understand.

Anywho, it was fine. It’s not my favorite Florand, but it was enough, even with my reservations, that I will continue to read this series of hers for now.

I have this exact romance novel metaphysical crisis about every 6 months, but then I read something REALLY good and I can stand down. I always feel like there must be more great romance out there, if I can just find it. CBR and #BlameMalin has been so helpful for that.

I am in the same crisis and have yet to really claw my way out of it. My romance reading lately has dropped precipitously. I promise to let you know if I find the cure and when.
