Brownies and Broomsticks – Because Sometimes You Need to Read Fluff.

May 25, 2017 by BabyBearStrikesBack 1 Comment

I usually alternate serious books with fluffy books. This book may just be the epitome of fluff. I was on maternity leave for 6 months and, let me tell you, I did not have the brainpower to watch a TV show let alone read a complicated book. So when Audible recommended a “cozy mystery” for me, I was intrigued.

Katie Lightfoot just broke off her engagement and moved from Ohio to Savannah to open a bakery with her aunt and uncle. Just as their bakery is about to open, a wealthy local woman is killed and her uncle is accused of murder. In an effort to protect her uncle (and her new business venture), Katie starts doing some investigating of her own. In the process, she finds out she’s a witch and that her parents have been keeping her legacy hidden her whole life. The book then alternates between Katie the noob-witch figuring out how magic works, and Katie the intrepid investigator who gets everyone in town to open up to her and sticks her nose in the police investigation.

And of course, there’s the romance. Katie meets not one but two handsome suitors: a mysterious and sexy reporter who makes her magic tingle and a sexy fireman with a somber past who makes her feel like home.

So this is not a great book. The whole thing is just meh. I didn’t care about any of the characters, most were very forgettable. The magic wasn’t really magical but practical, which can be fun, but it wasn’t even that. She talks about herbs and cleansing her house with sage and why you should keep rosemary by your door. The recipes, however, were fantastic and I was constantly hungry while reading/listening.

Despite all its flaws I kept reading and even read the second in the series! But, like my attempts at reading Nora Roberts, I’m pretty sure the third one will be equally bland, so I’m just gonna give up now and see if I can find better quality fluff.

Sympathy on maternity leave reading choices. I’m alternating books from my unread backlog pile with comics to try to achieve balance.
