I am no stranger to the amazingness of Brian K. Vaughan. I loved both “Y: The Last Man” and “Runaways” so when a friend offered to loan me “Saga” I was on board. I enjoy graphic novels but don’t frequent shops or seek them out regularly, so I know I’m a bit late to the game (the new volume was just released) but better late than never! And of course, I love this series just as much as the previous two.
This is definitely a really graphic graphic novel. Within the first few pages, you understand that the world you are in is a violent and hard place: this is not the comic you leave out for prying non-adult little eyes! (Take that as a disclaimer because I had a close call. Ha).
This is a real Romeo and Juliet sort of angle, two soldiers on opposite sides of a bloody and long war. She, a guard, and he, a prisoner. They make their escape and soon find themselves the center of a galaxy-wide search, of interest to many different parties because they have managed to procreate (possibly the first commingling of their two species). It is unclear of what their daughter will mean for the conflict but they are on the move, and pursued by robot royalty and cold-blooded mercenaries.
The narration is a bit of a spoiler, as their daughter is the narrator (so spoiler, she is going to make it), but there is plenty left to be discovered during this journey across the galaxy. As with Vaughan’s other works, the dialogue is smart and funny, and their are lots of surprising twists and turns in plot. It’s definitely a series I am restraining myself to read slooooowly because once it is over I know I’ll be bummed, but at least this is an active series so hopefully the end won’t come for quite a while.
