Ok guys. I consider myself to be pretty intelligent. Like I totally know words, and even how to use them! I can name all of the James Bond movies, and who played Bond in each of them. Additionally, I’m a great Googler. Now that I’ve laid out my case (ooh it’s a legal book – unintentional pun!) for my unparalleled wit, I want to say that I did not see the twist in this story coming. And it wasn’t one of those out of left field twists for the sake of being twisty. Once it happened (after I closed my jaw, which had hung open, shocked, for a few minutes), I thought back and realized that the author had peppered clues throughout, and that it totally made sense. That’s a nice twist.
The main character is a Philadelphia defense attorney nicknamed Mick. He’s got a wife, a daughter, a partner in his law firm, an ex-con brother, and a “best friend”. I put that last one in quotes because he’s not a very good best friend. Anyway, Mick’s BFF David is accused of murdering a journalist that he was having an affair with. He immediately retains Mick and his firm. The DA is a sworn enemy of Mick, and he’s really determined to fry David. I liked how the characters were fleshed out in this story. They all have individual personalities and motivations. Lordy do they all have motivations. Except for the daughter, she’s just being a kid. There’s a ton of misdirection, both by the accused party to the potential jury pool, and in the actual trial by like almost everyone.
From the beginning I didn’t really think that David did it. You’re not really supposed to think that he did it. How the actual murder details get out though, holy crap. I’m sorry that wasn’t a real sentence. I just haven’t been shocked by a book in a while. Please read this if you like murder / legal / relationship thrillers at all. Plus, it’s included in Kindle Unlimited, so I read it for free!
