Son

The final book of The Giver quartet is called Son. This book is broken into three parts, and ends up tying the quartet together. We begin with meeting Claire after she has been selected to be a birthmother. We see a new part of the community that Jonas grew up in. Giving birth is hard for her and it is decided that this is not the best job for Claire, and she is reassigned. But she wonders, what happened to her child? Nearly a year later, she continues working at her reassignment, and since she does not want to see her child, whom she learned was a boy, assigned to a family, she volunteers to stay behind. When everyone comes back, she learns of something unique that happened to a boy named Jonas. Throughout part one, we see Claire caring about her son and wanting to spend time with him.

In the second part of the book, we see Claire outside of the village, having been in an accident and losing all her memories. She is taken in by another community and spends years with them as her memories come back. She is determined to find her son and a man in the community helps her prepare to leave the village and search for her son.

In the third part of the book, we rejoin the community that Kira’s father lives in, many years after Matty brought Kira to the community. Much has changed, there is no longer a trade mart and there is a new leader. Jonas has married Kira and together they have two children.
