Book Club part 2: Ubikonicity

July 12, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

God there’s nothing worse than doing something and then it messing up and having to do it again. My page refreshed for some reason and erased all the things I wrote about this book previously. It’s weird because that’s sort of what this book is about.

This is the second book of my friend only book club where we’re reading his choice Ubik by Philip K Dick, which is about the vast future landscape of 1992. Remember back then when we had telepaths running amok and lunar colonies and vidphones?

Well Ubik remembers.

This book is about a group of telepaths and anti-telepaths (people who negate or reverse powers) who get maybe blown up in a terrorist or corporate terrorist attack. They spend the rest of the novel going through a series of temporal horrors as their timeline possibly keeps getting changed by power run amok (I know I used that twice).

Like a lot of parallel universe and time travel movies and book it get effing scary from here. Especially if you’re me and get real effing scared.

The only thing that keeps it in check is Philip K Dick’s hokey style and slightly too trying to predict the future world-building. There’s a lot of it in this book.

I think this book went over better with me than our last book, and it would surprise me if it were the same for my friend. I guess ultimately it doesn’t matter since my life is likely nothing more than a blip in a time travel paradox and I will wake up tomorrow thinking it’s totally normal I have a handle-bar mustache or like a pet duck or something.

I want to read more older things and British things this year, and some that are both. Oh and I’ll probably end up reading a bunch of Italian and French writers this year too. I think. View vel veeter's reviews»
