“My sport- the special skill I’ve developed my whole life- is surviving, and that doesn’t leave much room for following Cinderella dreams…”

July 16, 2017 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

This one makes me a little nervous because I know there was some controversy before the book came out. It seems as though it was over a bad summary that has since been changed. Some people also took offense at how a lesbian character ends up having feelings for a boy, which is understandable. However, the book also details the journey of a character realizing that she might not be just one thing, that things can change. She doesn’t really use the term bisexual, but she lands near there. Not straight, but not all the way gay.

Ramona is the character in question. She is tall, she has blue hair, and she likes girls. Her family lost their home to Hurricane Katrina and have been living in a couple of trailers ever since. Her father is constantly working at a fancy hotel, she works a paper route before school and waits tables with her sister after school. She has no plans for after her coming senior year, other than working and supporting her sister and future niece.

When her childhood friends moves back into town, Ramona and Freddie grow close again. After being dumped by their respective long-distance girlfriends, they decide to swear off girls. Eventually, they start to fall for each other.

It’s a lot of heavy stuff, and it’s very well written. I very much hope that I didn’t offend anyone with my review.
