Oh, $#@! – Translated From Skrull

July 10, 2017 by emmalita Leave a Comment

While perusing the free Deadpool volumes available to me, I decided to go ahead and try as many different Deadpool writers as possible. Here we have Daniel Way’s Deadpool, taking on a Skrull force, defeating them, and then defecting to their side in Secret Invasion. Deadpool reasons that he was created to be a killer of men, so why not kill men for the Skrull?

Daniel Way’s Deadpool is crazy with a purpose, talks to himself intelligently, and that we see his P.O.V. (Pool-o-vision).

I like Way’s Deadpool almost as much as Duggan and Posehn, and more than Joe Kelly and Cullen Bunn’s versions. At his best, Deadpool uses his jokes, insanity, and awareness that he is a comic book character to move the plot forward. In the issues dealing with the  Skrull, Deadpool allows his DNA to be combined with Skrull DNA to create nearly unkillable Skrull supersoldiers. Things don’t go well for the Skrull. It’s an entertaining 3 issues.

After his Skrull adventures, Deadpool is broke and needs a job. He checks in with Zeke, a man who has screwed him before. Zeke does have a job, one which does not involve killing his wife, but killing the surgeon who turned her into a zombie. These are iZombie type zombies, they look mostly normal when they have fed. The final two issues dealing with the doctor, the wife, the zombies and Zeke are not that interesting.

In the end, I still feel like Duggan and Posehn have the best handle on Deadpool. I understand Gail Simone wrote a Deadpool run in the early Aughts. I’d be interested to see her take.
