Geoff Johns’ Reimagining of Batman Continues to Be Great

September 8, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

In a very recent previous post, I talked about how much I loved Geoff Johns’ take on heroes such as Booster Gold and Wonder Woman (movie version). While he’s a big deal at DC now, there’s a famous story about how we wrote a letter to DC suggesting a storyline that was soundly rejected as being dumb. Years later, as a DC writer, he fan-fictioned that story into DC reality. I love that, and I think it captures why I like Johns so much – he’s a fan.

This book picks up where volume one (click the link for my review) left off. Bruce Wayne has been Batman for some time now (I would guess a few months or a year), and the city is used to him. Criminals fear him and think he’s some sort of actual monster. Most of the city likes him because they’re good people and therefore have nothing to be afraid of. Batman is finding his place in Gotham. (There’s a few panels early in the comic that parallel the beginning of volume one and show his progress. It’s pretty awesome to see how far Bruce has come so fast.)

The events in volume one, though, have had consequences, and the city must deal with them. Bruce has kicked a fire ant hill and now everyone is facing the consequences. Johns’ uses this book to expand the universe. The first book gave us Gordon(s), Cobblepot, Alfred and Bruce. This book gives us Dent and Killer Croc. Just as in volume one, Johns reimagines the characters to a level where they’re familiar but exciting and novel.

If you liked volume one, grab this one, as well. You can buy both on Amazon for a total of about $17.
