Ok so I had to read this book for work. I’m in this group at my job called the guiding coalition. It’s all about making small changes to make bigger changes, and to get people involved and “energized”. I don’t think I’ve drunken the Kool Aid yet. We had to read this book to get us ready for “the big opportunity”. We’re split into smaller groups and working on projects to improve our company. I’m all for that, but it’s just a little culty for me.
Anyway, the book! So it’s a super quick read. I finished it in under an hour. There are cute meerkat drawings throughout. The authors call it an adult fable. I think I’m actually fond of adult fables after reading this. I was expecting dry, bland, and boring. It’s actually a cute story, and while you’re reading it, you associate the meerkat’s lessons to your job.
The basis of the story is how a Kat named Nadia sees issues in her clan, travels to other clans, sees worse issues, and then sees some solutions. She then brings them back to her clan to try to improve the day to day lives of everyone. It’s all about volunteering, and how you can incorporate this (I’m gonna go out on a limb and call it Communist principles) into your work life. Kats gather food, and share their catch with everyone, working for the good of the group, and all that jazz. Like I said, it’s an easy read, and it was actually kinda cute. I obviously wouldn’t have read it if it wasn’t a requirement, but it could’ve been so so much worse!
