OMG this was bad. Like bad, but I still wanted to read it bad.

September 19, 2017 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Thank goodness I borrowed this ebook for free from the library.  The last ebook I reviewed here (Sense and Insensibility), I paid about $4 for, and I would’ve paid double, because it was awesome.  I just went to Amazon to get the link for this post, and saw that this is $7.  I maybe maybe maybe would’ve paid a dollar, but absolutely no more than that.  Anyway, like my title says, it was not a good book.  However, I wanted to read it to the end to see what the twist was.  Do not read this book, I’ll just tell you the twist.  I only gave it two stars because it was a quick read and I wanted to finish it.

So we start out with Eve and Ryan, a college couple who are newly dating.  Ryan is accepted into a writer’s workshop, and Eve is jealous because she wants to spend time with him.  She gets some strings pulled so she can go to.  She’s not a writer, but all of a sudden in this book she’s Stephen King.  There are so many things wrong with this book.  The characters (most of them) are one dimensional.  Like literally, there is only one dimension to them.  The one girl is a romantic.  Another girl likes to cook.  There’s a dude that sporty?  Eve, Ryan, and Angela get some character development, but not much.

Angela starts winning everyone over by buying things for people and acting super nice.  Eve doesn’t buy it though, and she thinks Angela is trying to steal her boyfriend.  Angela starts writing a book called Ten Little Writers.  She writes about the people in the group, and each night in the story, one of them dies.  Wicked – someone’s evil alter ego (split personality I think) is systematically killing people based on Angela’s book.

It’s mostly the writing style that I hate.  Everyone acts like teens or super old people.  Nobody acts like college students.  They’re either super excited about working on their books, or being coy.  College kids would be making out and drinking (at least a little bit!), not studiously writing every single night.  Oh also, there’s some mysterious illness that their professor gets immmmmmmediately, and everyone’s on lockdown.  I feel like I say this every time I didn’t like a book – the premise was cool and could’ve been done well.  Could’ve been done well is not a good phrase, but there you go.

OK, here’s the spoiler.  Highlight below if you want to know whose evil split personality Wicked is!

ANGELA!  And it’s all wrapped up in like thirty seconds at the end.  Oh, and she gets away and does the same thing somewhere else!

I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too! View kfishgirl's reviews»
