Where’s my super suit?

I’ve been a fan of Lane Huerta’s Etsy shop Lovelane for some time. Her designs are just right for superheroes of the younger variety. She combines bright colors and simple construction for costumes that will hold up for the young adventurers in your life.

If you are a beginner sewist, or have never picked up a needle and thread, Superhero Sewing is a great place to jump right in. Like many crafting books, the first part of the book is an introduction to materials and tools, terminology and techniques. There are a handful of no-sew projects, but none of the sewing projects are overly complicated. The seams are straightforward, the templates are large and simple designs. There’s nothing to fear here. (Okay, maybe the magician’s top hat might be a little fiddly. But you were meaning to learn how to sew curved seams anyway, weren’t you?)

This book is definitely geared toward beginners. If you’re an intermediate or advanced sewist, I imagine you could probably approximate many of Huerta’s designs without the instructions.

Huerta’s designs fall under a few broad, popular categories: superheroes, pirates, fairies and dragons, magicians, and woodland creatures.

Unfortunately, my review copy was electronic, so I didn’t have a chance to try out the pattern pieces and instructions. (Transferring template pieces from my iPad Mini seemed a bridge too far.) My impression of the instructions is that they are clear and easy to understand. All of the projects look like they could probably be completed by a beginner in the space of a couple of afternoon.
