Are people really like this? Really? In real life?

October 10, 2017 by kella 1 Comment

So, immediately after reading The Break, I needed a palette cleanser – something a bit more mindless and light.  This hit the spot for that.   A fairly generic mystery that was entertaining, but it wasn’t a complete home run for me.

The Lying Game is about four friends who are living their separate lives in England, all while hiding a secret that they have been lying about since they were in high school together.  When something threatens to expose their secret, they come together to protect their story and to support each other.

I have a similar issue with this book, as I did with Ware’s The Girl in Cabin 10…. she writes really unlikeable characters.  I am ALL for well rounded and flawed protagonists – no one likes to read about a perfect and annoying heroine…. but geesh.  I keep wanting to take her characters and just throttle them.  They’re all so self involved and seem very clueless about the consequences of their selfish actions.  It makes it very hard to root for them at all in the course of these books.

She is good at revealing her clues in small measured doses, so even if you are pretty sure you have everything figured out, there’s always a tiny little bit of doubt.  It’s a good ‘beach read’ and kept me entertained, but don’t expect anything revolutionary here.
