If IKEA was built on the site of an abandoned super scary prison

November 6, 2017 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So in my profile writeup, I say that I have a hard time not finishing books.  I tried really hard to finish this book.  At first the issue was that the story was a little dark and creepy, which I love.  However, I read my Kindle books at night, and dark and creepy doesn’t really connect well with me sleeping!  This made it a little more difficult, because I had to read during lunch at work, or at a time during daylight.  I kept trying to get back to it, and I had to take it out of my library twice.  By the final time I took the ebook out of the library, I kinda lost interest.

This story starts out describing a store that sounds like a slightly low-rent IKEA.  We get introduced to the workers, and we find out that weird things are happening overnight in the store.  The managers and stuff are trying to figure out what’s going on, and it’s mostly from a corporate perspective, like “corporate is coming to tour, we have to figure out why there’s poop on the couch”.  That’s my quote by the way, not a quote from the book :)  The manager decides that he and two other workers are going to stay overnight and figure out wtf is going on.

And then we get into a bit of a ghost story… I liked the beginning of it because you really get sucked into the spooky aspects of the story.  I was creeped out, and I really wanted to know what was going on.  Further into the story though, it gets a little bogged down.  There’s a head bad guy ghost, and a whole group of tormented souls.  It just seems unwinnable and repetitious for the actual people.

I had a hard time staying interested at that point, and this whole CBR isn’t supposed to be a slog, so I quit.  Hi, my name is Kfishgirl, and I quit a book this year!  However, I made it to 87%, and I’m reviewing it, so I’m calling it a win!  Long story short – the beginning is ok, the middle is pretty awesome, and the near end (I never got to the actual end) is just not great.  That’s why I gave it 2 stars.  Read at your own peril and let me know how it ends, or not, because I really don’t care :)

I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too! View kfishgirl's reviews»
