Bramble and Maggie: Snow Day

January 16, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The main review is for Bramble and Maggie: Snow Day, yet I will plug all books of Jessie Haas still in print. Mostly these are the Bramble and Maggie series. Haas loves horses. How do I know? Most of her books feature a horse in them, even the one she did for the American Girl series. As well as almost every time she and her husband stop by the bookstore I work at, they would stop in and say “Hi” and we would talk horses. (And space-mice, which is her husband’s book, but I digress.)

Bramble and Maggie: Snow Day is a story for the early chapter-book reader. It is geared either as a read aloud (therefore for all ages that will sit and listen to a story or as a one chapter a night bedtime read) or as a read-alone for second graders. Making the ages approximately 7 to 10. However, the subject matter is for all ages, allowing for a strong younger reader to be fine and a lower-reading-level older child will also be able to enjoy it.

The story is one day a very bad storm hits Maggie’s town. Due to the fact the snow drifts block the door to Bramble’ stalls and does not allow it to close, Maggie leaves it open thinking Bramble will stay inside. However, Bramble has other ideas and wants to have an adventure and escapes. (Spoiler): Bramble does come home safely and helps all the neighbors to dig themselves out of the results of one heck of a blizzard.  Anyone who grew up in New England will probably appreciate the fun snow can be, but also knows the troubles it causes!
