C is for Corpse

January 3, 2018 by I am not the pithy one 2 Comments

I have always wanted to read in order Sue Grafton’s alphabet series.  I started this fall with A is for Alibi, followed by B, and then things got busy and the series fell off my radar.

When I heard about Sue Grafton’s death, (seriously, fuck cancer) and the alphabet now ending with Y, I was inspired to pick it back up again.  Which is how two days into the new year it became my first cannonball read.

The lead character, Kinsey Millhone, a tough, smart, compassionate PI, her landlord Henry, and the ever fantastic Rosie (who owns the Hungarian restaurant down the street) are back, in this stand alone novel, which picks up shortly after the events in B.

Kinsey is hired by a guy who is sure his accident was a murder attempt.  But he can’t remember who might have wanted him dead, or what he might have done to inspire the attempt.  All he has is a lingering sense of danger….

It’s a great follow up and a fantastic read.  It’s interesting reading a book set in the ’80’s, before ubiquitous cell phones, computers, and Google searches. Typewriters, microfiches and cheques all make appearances, which doesn’t make me nostalgic for the ’80’s so much as thankful I don’t have to scroll through microfiches any longer.

All in all looking forward to D is for Deadbeat. Hopefully it won’t take me as long to get around to it.

I live in the very north, and the nights are very long, except in the summer. I keep wanting to sign up every year, so this year I'm taking the plunge. View I am not the pithy one's reviews»

I’m thinking about starting over with this series (I think I fell by the wayside around the letter R, for no particular reason). However, I just read a lovely piece by Laura Lippman that talked about Sue Grafton, Marcia Muller, and Sara Paretsky being the holy trinity for her and those 3 writers (along with Lawrence Block) were the ones that pulled me into a number of mystery series in the late-80’s when I was basking in my post-undergraduate ability to read what I wanted. Congrats on taking the plunge and for a good first review.

I have read all 25 in order and I reviewed Y a few months ago. I’m still devestated.
    Congrats on your first review!
