I didn’t care for it, but I couldn’t put it down

I’m going to preface my CBR by saying that I am a book snob. I have referred to Dan Brown books as “entry level”. When it comes to books, my boyfriend says I am everyone he hates on the internet (I think he means it fondly?). So. Yeah.

And I read Big Little Lies and holy smokes did I love that book. My whole book club loved that book, we talked about literally nothing else the whole night we met and how often does that happen? But then my mom saw Liane Moriarty on my library list and said something about “Oh, gosh, Tori, her? All her books are the same.” And I’d only read the one. Y’know, she was on to something.

I just … Liane Moriarty is the Dan Brown of chick-lit. The book was simply not good, and yet I could not put it down. Unreliable narrator? Check. Estranged families? Check. Dark secrets held till the very end? Check. Plots that could have been solved in like two minutes if people spoke to each other? Check. But UGH I had to know what happened next! The characters do all feel like distinctly different people, I’ll give her that. And I’ve never been married (or divorced) or dealt with honestly most of the issues in this book, so maybe I’m just too removed. But yeah. “Meh” about sums it up.

So call it a beach read. It’s a good digest-in-a-day kind of book. It won’t linger, but it wasn’t supposed to. It’s store-brand air-popped popcorn–it satisfies a craving, but you’re going to wish you’d had the real thing.
