What if, what if, what if

January 28, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

When I found out a new Kristin Cashore book was coming out I was REALLY excited. When I found out it wasn’t a new book in the Graceling series, I was a little less excited, but cautiously optimistic. It wasn’t something I’d pre-order, but it was something I’d get on the library hold list for. I was super curious what direction this book would take and if I’d like it as much as the Graceling books. Luckily, I can say that I really enjoyed Jane, Unlimited. Still, I wouldn’t go into it expecting it to be in the same vein of Graceling. This one is contemporary with a seriously mind trippy, science fiction twist.

I don’t want to give too much away because it’d ruin the fun of the book, but the set-up is that eighteen year old Jane has recently lost her last living relative, dropped out of college, and accepted an invitation to stay at a palatial beach house called Tu Reviens. She promised her aunt that if she was ever invited, she’d say yes so she packs up all her umbrellas (she makes them, so there are quite a few) and embraces her new pad. It quickly becomes apparent that all is not as it seems and inquisitive Jane decides to seek some truth. Baxlala nailed it when she compared it to Jane Eyre. Although the tone isn’t quite as dark, it’s an apt comparison.

I’m being deliberately vague here, but you should know going in that the beginning starts a little slow and then builds momentum all the way through to the ending. To be honest, I wasn’t totally sure I’d stick with it at first. I’m really glad I did though because it ended up being both a book that I had a lot of fun reading and a book that made me think about things in a new way.
