Jo Nesbo is fast becoming one of my favourite authors of all time. I absolutely love his ability to create a suspense mystery that always includes nice and neat twists. Nothing ridiculously out there (which often spoils a good thriller) but always surprising.
The Thirst was definitely filled with little twists and turns, with a fairly gruesome murderer on the loose. Again, Harry Hole is the main detective on the case (called back from retirement to help out). And with each new Harry Hole novel, I find myself falling more in love with the main character. I can’t explain why, he is not particularly nice and polite and socially confident and smug, yet he certainly has a softer side, along with some internal conflict. I love the way he is consumed with his work, along with caring for the few people that matter to him.
As for the story line, this book is about a murder who displays “vampirism” – the need to drink the blood from his victims. There are a number of smaller sub plots involving the people Harry works with, as well as the health issue with Harry’s wife.
One of the writing skills that I admire about Jo Nesbo is his ability to introduce characters that have minimal impact on the story, but leave you questioning and wondering if they are involved in the murders – adding to the mystery and making it harder to determine the actual criminal/s. He does this in a way where a character is introduced, with a very subtle suggestion that they could be involved, instead of heavily alluding to them being the criminal, arresting them, then realising they are innocent (my least favourite ploy).
The Thirst is another fabulous book by Jo Nesbo that I heavily recommend!
