Getting to know some new authors in a familiar setting

There won’t be any spoilers for Star Wars in this review.  This book also contains no spoilers for the movies.

 

Canto Bight is a new location to the Star Wars universe.  It is a planet that is relevant only because on it rests the city of Canto Bight.  Canto Bight, the place, is Las Vegas and Dubai but more extravagant.  Canto Bight, the book, is a collection of short stories follows a several minor characters, heretofore unknown to the greater Star Wars universe.

So, I love the Star Wars new cannon audiobooks.  I never read the books from the Expanded Universe, now called the Legends.  I didn’t read it because it was too nerdy for me which makes me sad now.  I could’ve enjoyed all of this for a very long time but I let my youthful pride get in the way.  But I digress, the Star Wars audiobooks have peerless production quality.  There are a lot of little things that make the experience enjoyable.  The voice actors/narrators are outstanding.  They employ ambient noise based upon what is happening, little things like crowds talking, ships flying, or my favorite, blasters firing.  They all create an ambience that just improve the listening experience.

Alright, Canto Bight, the book, contains four short stories from four different authors.  I don’t want to discuss exactly what each story is about as I don’t think I could make them sound as interesting as they are.  I will say that I am seeking out other works by all four authors involved and I look forward to reading more by each of them.  The stories themselves are probably not significant in the larger scheme of Star Wars lore but they were fascinating looks at the regular, mundane people the populate the universe and that is why I loved them.

Don’t read this just because you like Star Wars.  Read this if you like Star Wars and world-building.  They are fun stories in a setting you probably know.
