Oh, If I Had a Hammer

March 7, 2018 by emmalita 3 Comments

You may have heard, Thor is a woman now. What happened? Nick Fury whispered in Thor’s ear and with a few words made him unworthy of Mjolnir. His ex, Jane Foster picked it up and took on the mantle of Thor. Thor got all upset, tried to fight her (not knowing it was Jane), but Mjolnir likes Jane better. At some point, Thor Odinson lost his arm and had it replaced with Uru. Now he and Bucky are twinsies. Maybe they could go on adventures together, or, more likely, sit around drinking and bitching about how cold their metal arm is in space.

Thor the Unworthy is going by Odinson now. He’s drinking a lot. Since he can’t fly with his hammer, he is now flying on a goat. He has an axe. He’s still really strong and doesn’t need a helmet or spacesuit to survive the vacuum of space. He has accepted that Mjolnir has chosen a new Thor. Instead of forging a new identity for himself, he drinks, beats up trolls, and pines for his hammer. As soon as he hears about an alternate universe Mjolnir landing in Old Asgard, he goes running, because apparently his life isn’t worth living without a hammer.

I’m having a hard time feeling much sympathy. It’s hard not to compare him to the MCU Thor, who also lost his hammer, but learned to use his lightning instead.

The Unworthy Thor is fine. It’s a perfectly serviceable story between what Thor does after losing the right to Mjolnir and whatever happens next. I like Jason Aaron. I felt like more could have been done with this story. Beta Ray Bill shows up, and I kind of wanted him to pick up the new hammer. We get Thori, the best hell hound ever. But we get way too much sulky, angry Unworthy Thor. Anyway, it reminded me to catch up on how Jane is doing.
