Zombie fungus?

March 26, 2018 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Another short and more or less forgettable book I listened to while moving boxes and cleaning floors. I picked this one up because it showed up on a list of 50 Horror Writers who aren’t Stephen King or something like that. I like Stephen King a lot and so I figured, sure I will read more horror. And I was also review some more here soon. Maybe I don’t like Horror so much as I like Stephen King.

Anyway, I also generally like Walter Mosley, but I’ve never found him to be “great”. So bear all that in mind. This novel involves a man in his thirties getting a phone call from someone referring to himself as papa and saying he’s cold at the cemetery. So he wants to investigate, when he gets there, he’s attacked by this person, who looks and sounds and acts/knows like his father. At first, he thinks maybe he’s a deranged half-brother who heard lots of stories from their shared father filling in memories. It turns out to be more and different from that, but if I say anything more it would spoil some of the plot.

Over all, I think this is an ok novel that is both not super memorable and also kind of derivative. This reminded me a lot of Nalo Hopkinson in a lot of ways and also definitely Octavia Butler, but being less good than either of them at all. So like I said, I won’t think about this book much after this.

I want to read more older things and British things this year, and some that are both. Oh and I’ll probably end up reading a bunch of Italian and French writers this year too. I think. View vel veeter's reviews»
