Commander in Cheese

Last year I picked up a little book called Commander in Cheese: The Big Move by Lindsey Leavitt. Something tells me she might have been a Hilary fan as the President that is the big cheese in this book is a woman.  The Big Move is the story of two siblings (a brother and sister mouse named Ava and Dean Squeakerton) who have the run of the White House. When the new human president is elected, they have the adventure of a life time trying to hide from the other new members: The President, her children and their, CAT!

Facts about the White House, The Presidents and other history are sprinkled within the text. The mice world mimics the human world (Ava and Dean’s father is the mouse president; they have Secret Service Mice and so forth).  This year I read Oval Office Escape and Have a Mice Flight! where the reader is introduced to the Oval Office and Air Force One. Bonus back matter is filled with tons of cool facts about presidents, the White House, and U.S. history.

These books are quick, fun reads for adults. They have the feel of classics like The Littles and The Borrowers. For the young reader (ages high 6-7 years old to young 9-10) they are a grand adventure. It is history but only fun! A. G. Ford’s illustrations (black and white sketches) are scattered on most pages allowing for paws…pause…between the text of the story.

Book four in the series, The Birthday Suit, will be hunted down and put on the reading pile which is now taller than me (of course, at only a bit over 5 feet, that is not hard to do!)
