Magic binds (but it doesn’t unblock my nose)

April 29, 2018 by TheShitWizard 3 Comments

I know I enjoyed this instalment of the Kate Daniels series. However, I also know that my brain was virtually buzzing with the flu when I read it, so it’s all taken on the slight haze of a Night Nurse influenced dream in my head.

If I remember correctly (do point out any flu medicine induced hallucinations), Roland is busy building a stronghold on the borders of Atlanta, sending Kate into conniptions. He’s also kidnapped Saiman, so the tenuous truce that has been holding between them since Kate claimed the city is starting to shake, as Kate isn’t one to sit back and let her friends – even her creepy ones – get tortured. Which is how, in the midst of arranging her wedding to Curran, she finds herself carrying around her dead aunt who is teaching her more about her powers and, despite the warnings that a battle with her father will see either her husband or unborn child killed, amassing an army to take him down.

Elsewhere within the world of Kate Daniels I did wonder if there’d been a Derek & Julie book that I’d skipped, as things seem to have subtly changed between them in this instalment. I loved the reveal of who Christopher really was before his mind was broken, and any inclusion of Roman is a good thing in my books.

With an interesting nugget of information unveiled at the climax of this relating to how Kate and Roland’s life forces may be intertwined, I’m intrigued to see how Andrews will resolve the series. Not long to wait to find out….

Ilona Andrews self-published a novella about Derek and Julie, set between the last book and this one. It’s called Magic Stars and is possibly the start of a new thing, starring Derek and Julie. It’s not essential to the plot of this one, but if you want to catch up on things before the Hugh book and the last of the full series books come out, it could be a good thing to check out.
