Graphic Novel Flop

June 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure if there were pages missing from my copy or there is a series before this that filled in some blanks, but the entire time I was reading I felt like I was in the middle of the story. I never saw what I would consider a beginning and when it ended I was thinking “Wait…that’s it? Shouldn’t there have been some kind of wrap up?” I know this is a series, but still the story ends where it started, in the middle.

I could not keep the characters straight. I assumed you are supposed to know about the quirks of the characters just because the other characters know about them. The illustrations are the only real highlight for me. They are funny and they have some fun details, but I still feel like I am missing something. Many times, when graphic novels go basic with the text I can fill in the story with the art. This time this just barely happens.

The fact that they tease with the manual of the Lumberjanes was awkward. The colors of the illustrations are amazing. And the end has other possible versions and some prototypes of what the illustrators thought they could be. That was a nice touch. Overall, I am afraid I have missed the point and the appeal of this series of graphic novels. The Lumberjanes series is getting much attention. There have gotten great reviews from reviewers and my coworkers. I think they have even won awards.

Lumberjanes Beware the Kitten Holy Volume One had potential, but perhaps I needed to have read something before this. Though the Yetis were a treat.
