I really wanted to like this, but…

June 1, 2018 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So this book was suggested to me by someone (I think here in one of my other zombie book reviews, or maybe over on Pajiba).  I bought the audiobook from Amazon, and started listening to it a few weeks ago when my carpool partner was away for two weeks.  Like I said in my title – I really wanted to like it.  Unfortunately, it never really grabbed me.  The idea was solid, and I don’t know if it was just the writing style, or the plot that I nearly hated.  It was read by Eva Amurri, and I love her voice, so I don’t think it was her either.

The main character is Jessie, and she died in a car crash nine years prior to the beginning of our story.  She introduces us to the world she lives in, and the gang she hangs in.  One thing I know for sure I didn’t like was all the senseless violence.  Don’t get me wrong – I have no problem with violence, or murder, or gore, or anything like that.  (In books I mean, not in real life you monster!)  It just seemed senseless.  The gang beat each other up alllll the time.  It got old, and it wasn’t interesting.

There’s a zombie and human virus that starts infecting everyone, and it seemed like a novel concept, but it didn’t take me anywhere exciting.  There was a lot of weird sentence structure, almost like Instagram captions.  Instead of “I just walked through the forest”, it’d be “Just walked through the forest”.  That type of sentence structure doesn’t do it for me.  It feels lazy and unfinished.  Anyway, this one was a disappoint for me, and I will not be completing the series!  That’s a big deal for a completionist like me!!

I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too! View kfishgirl's reviews»
