Cece Loves Science is the first picture book in a new series. Cece is a clever girl who asks questions. She loves science and she cannot wait to find out the answer to the question, “Do dogs eat vegetables?” Cece and her best friend, Isaac, tackle this question for their school project. Using the steps of science (brainstorming, asking questions, experimenting, and more) the answer soon is clear. Or is it? Cece learns that sometimes your first answer is not the only one.
Overall the book is a lovely book with a STEM theme. Yet, for this adult, it fell flat. Okay, this is nice. Now what? I think this book would be great as an early reader (for first to second grade readers) you can then have more story and details with how Cece and Isaac find out their answers. The illustrations of Vashti Harrison are bright and perfectly detailed. They draw you into the story.
Kimberly Derting and Shelli R. Johannes have created text that combines “science speak” in an easy to understand manner. If there are any questions, there is a glossary at the end of the story.
The part I enjoyed the most was the fact they mention four scientists and do a healthy mix of “types of people” I was nervous they would only mention women scientists as STEM is now pushing girls in science again. They mention two women and two men. One of whom is African-American. Yes, it is a little heavy handed that the teacher is Ms. Curie (but I will let that slide).
I am not sure if this book works for the older child who likes science, but would be a good introduction to the slightly younger child who likes science or whom should be introduced to it.
