Who’s the stranger in this house?

July 27, 2018 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This book was a fast read for me.  I’m not saying that because I think it was good, it just kept the momentum going.  I was just talking to my friend who I borrowed it from, and I said that the writing was a little simplistic.  It seemed like the writing wasn’t pretty enough or something?  Like: “Tom was upset.  He got in his car and drove away.”  I don’t know, it could’ve used a little more emotion maybe.  “Tom angrily slammed his car door and sped away.”  Whatever, my writing isn’t pretty either, but I don’t get paid for it!  Well, I guess technically I do get paid for writing, since I write investigations as my job, but they’re not supposed to be pretty!

Anyway, some of the book was fairly predictable, and the whole thing suffered from convenient silences or misunderstandings to further the tension.  Like just tell your husband that you escaped a troubled past.  How has that not come up in the 2+ years you’ve been together?  And I could’ve used a little more backstory on the neighbor / best friend.  She was just mysteriously unable to have kids and mad at her husband.  We didn’t really know why or how it happened.

I read a review on Goodreads that Tom was boring.  That is true, but boring people need love too!  He’s also a little bit dumb and quite naive.  I feel like in this age of social media and Google, you have to have checked out your future / current wife at least once!

Basically, if you want a quick read that doesn’t make you think too much, this could work.  If you’re looking for something deeper, try another one!

I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too! View kfishgirl's reviews»
