All I’ve got is this sunny afternoon and a whole lot of fun

August 15, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sun is a comfortable book that deals with the generations of grandfather and grandchild, patience and imagination. Sam Usher has continued his Seasons with Granddad Series Storm, Rain and Snow with Sun. These stories have a lot of color that represents their season. In Sun there are many bold reds, warm yellows, and deep oranges mostly, but all the colors represent as well. They are bright, warm and sunny. They fit the feel and theme of the book perfectly. The plot of the story is basic as it focuses on the child and his grandfather who are off to have a picnic on this hot, sunny day. They must find the perfect spot. Therefor as the grandfather navigates, the young child keeps lookout.

One can assume that they do not go through deserts and other extreme conditions. Yes, their journey will take a while to get the perfect spot, but you know how kids are: there is a lot of sun, heat and just distances to deal with, and they get tired, use their imagination and Usher has fun with this by exaggerating the journey with a whimsical touch. When they get to the perfect spot, they are meet by some interesting people. Are these other kids? Adults? Pirates? Or his stuffed toys (excuse me, part of their equipment)?

There is the perfect amount of details to the illustrations. Such as check out the benches the grandfather takes breaks on. And, at the end, the party has a lot of busyness going on! Each illustration fits its text as the text returns the favor and fits the illustration.
