Wonder Woman

August 17, 2018 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I found this on a list of the Best Wonder Woman comics. https://www.ranker.com/list/best-wonder-woman-comics-storylines/ranker-comics There are many such lists out there. The idea of reading a Wonder Woman comic written by a woman sounded good to me. I wanted to read some of her stories after seeing the amazing movie last year. The problem, of course, is she’s been a comics character since 1941! So every point you “jump into” has a giant back story you don’t know. Not to mention the fact that every 25 years or less there’s a “reboot” and you end up with alternate realities that undo a lot of backstory. Even this story continues a story where some of the Amazons are in prison for betraying Hippolyta. I was delighted to discover the introduction to this comic was written by Mercedes Lackey. Every young nerd has a gateway writer that spawns their love of science fiction/fantasy. Mine is Mercedes Lackey.

I chose the image I used here because Wonder Woman spends a lot of time in this arc undercover working Department of Metahuman Affairs with Tom Tresser, her love interest. Like many love interests of superheroes, he is decidedly meh. Part of the story also takes place on Themyscira where it shows Diana’s origin story and how some of the Amazons aren’t pleased with the fact that Hippolyta is the only one on the island who has a child. Simone touches on the anguish that people who cannot have children and want them feel with sensitivity and compassion.

There’s another story line with Wonder Woman traveling to a planet with a Klingon like race called the Khund that has a lot of humor and heart. She goes toe-to-toe with a member of the Green Lantern Corps and they beat the snot out of each other. She is a warrior, with brains and heart. Also, Etta Candy is the best in this and needs to be in the next WW movie much more/in everything.

I want to make one selling point to read this graphic novel: Diana’s home world of Themyscira is invaded by Nazis. Do you want to see Wonder Woman punch Nazis? It’s incredibly satisfying. Go read this and get inspired to punch your own Nazis.

My husband Jason and I are wonder twin cancer survivors! Sadly, all the radiation did not make us bionic...yet. Last year was a year of firsts for me: first time I successfully reached my cannonball goal, and the first time an author retweeted my review and gave me a shoutout! View Debcapsfan's reviews»
